Jonathan's area of expertise is location photography and video. Whether it's a portrait or interview of a doctor or nurse at a hospital, an industrial photo of a giant furnace motor-thing, or annual reports and pharmaceutical advertising, He's your man! In addition, his work focuses on table-top and product work, as well as the sale of of stock images.
To keep his rates reasonable (as they have been for over 28 years), Jonathan hires stylists and assistants on a freelance basis and hires only those that will work best for each assignment. For over 16 years the studio has been located in Logan Square, a historic tree-lined neighborhood just north of downtown Chicago. Situated within a historic 87-year-old gray stone building, his studio is large enough to accommodate most assignments. Most of what Jonathan shoots in the studio are table-top/product assignments and portraits. Jonathan only uses digital capture for all assignments, including his personal work. More about digital capture can be found in "Thank you God, for digital photography...". For assignments, he relies on Nikon D2X SLRs along with Nikon's extremely high quality AFS-D optics. For video projects, either Canon's high definition XH A1 or Panasonic's HVX200a video cameras. Video projects are delivered in high definition 1920x1080 or standard definition 16:9 formats. As far as computer workstations: Apple. For location work, Jonathan uses a 15" Powerbook 1.67 MHz 80GB HD 1.5GB SDRAM laptop, and almost always shoots tethered to the laptop from one of the Nikons, either by Firewire or USB 2.0. Viewing a captured image takes around 10 seconds! In the studio, the editing suite consists of a 21" Apple Calibrated Studio display, driven by a G5 1.8GHZ 160GB HD 4GB DDR SDRAM, an assortment of external Firewire hard drives, CD/DVD burners and a high speed DSL connection. All of the operating systems are Apple's OS 10.5.5 (Leopard). For scanning 35mm film, I use a Nikon Coolscan 4000 ED. For display and portfolio, Jonathan uses Epson's Stylus 4000 print engine, which uses eight-color Ultra-Chrome ink for permanence. Proof sheets of assignments are delivered to clients. If requested, "web galleries" of the proof sheets can be shared with anyone who has access to the internet and has a designated client password. Jonathan delivers final images to his clients in any of the following ways: 8 Bit RGB TIFF (35 MB), 16 bit RGB TIFF (70 MB), or 8 bit CMYK TIFF (47 MB). Delivery is either CD-ROM via Fed Ex or uploaded to a server via ftp. He tries to keep color corrections minimal, preferring to let the clients engraver/printer handle corrections and conversions to meet their own specs. Software includes, but is not limited to: Adobe Photoshop CS2 (9.0.2), Adobe Illustrator 10.0.03, Final Cut Express 3.5.1, LiveType 2.1, Soundtrack 1.5, Nikon Capture 4.4.2, Nikon View 6.2.7, Adobe Go-Live 6.0.1, Toast Titanium 7.1.3. |
